From Waste Plastic To Recycled Pellets – A Simple Breakdown

You see plastic waste everywhere. Bottles, crates, packaging films, random plastic junk. It piles up. But here's the thing – most of it can be turned back into something useful. Not through magic, but through a pretty straightforward process: crushing, cleaning, and extrusion. Let's walk through how a standard plastic recycling line actually works.

Step one – crush it down

First, the collected waste plastic gets sorted. Metal, paper, glass – those get pulled out. What's left goes into a crusher. Our 600 or 700 series crushers, for example, are built for hard plastics like PET bottles and PP/PE crates. They chop everything into small, uniform flakes. Why? Because smaller pieces mean more surface area. That makes the next steps – washing and melting – way more effective. Think of it like shredding vegetables before cooking. Same logic.

Step two – wash it clean

Now, those plastic flakes are still dirty. Sludge, oil, glue, dust – you name it. If you don't get that stuff off, your final pellets will be garbage. So the line uses a multistage cleaning system. Hot water prewash loosens the grime. Then friction washing scrubs off the tough spots. After that, floating separation sorts materials by density – different plastics behave differently in water. Finally, dewatering and drying bring moisture down to under 3%. No water means no bubbles or defects later during extrusion. And yeah, the whole system recycles its own water. Less waste, lower cost.

Step three – melt, filter, and pelletize

Clean and dry flakes go into a singlescrew extruder. Heat it to somewhere between 180 and 280°C, depending on the plastic type. The material melts into a thick fluid. Then it passes through filters – twice – to catch any tiny impurities you missed. Once it's clean, the melt gets pushed through a die, forming long spaghettilike strands. Those strands drop into a water bath to cool and harden. Then a cutter chops them into small, uniform pellets. Screen them, package them, and you've got recycled plastic resin ready to sell.

Where do these pellets go?

Pretty much everywhere. Packaging, construction pipes, everyday items, car parts, electronics. Highgrade recycled PET can even be foodcontact approved. That's a fully closed loop – bottle back to bottle.
