Protective Film Coating Process & Common Production Problems

Protective film coating is a mature and widely applied roll-to-roll coating process, covering electronics protection, metal plate protection, glass surface protection, plastic profile and packaging industries. Its core production logic is to uniformly coat water-based or oil-based pressure-sensitive adhesive on PET, PE, PVC and other flexible substrates, forming a transparent, scratch-resistant, easy-to-peel protective layer. With the upgrading of downstream industry quality standards, high-precision, zero-defect and high-speed protective film coating has become the mainstream development trend of the industry.

The standard protective film coating process includes four core links: substrate unwinding and tension correction, precise glue coating, multi-stage drying and cooling, and final winding and slitting. In the unwinding stage, constant tension control is required to avoid substrate deviation and wrinkling, which is the premise of uniform coating. The coating link usually adopts comma coating or slot-die coating according to product requirements: comma coating is suitable for conventional medium-thickness protective films with low cost and flexible adjustment; slot-die coating is applied to high-precision electronic protective films to achieve ultra-thin and uniform coating with stable thickness deviation.

In actual mass production, protective film coating often faces typical technical problems that restrict product yield. The first common defect is coating unevenness, including transverse thickness deviation and longitudinal stripe marks, mostly caused by unstable die head gap, uneven glue feeding or fluctuating substrate tension. The second problem is surface bubbles and pinholes, resulting from insufficient glue defoaming, unreasonable drying temperature gradient or excessive coating speed, which seriously affects the transparency and adhesion of the protective film.

In addition, residual glue and difficult peeling are frequent after-sales pain points. This problem is mainly attributed to unreasonable adhesive formula viscosity and inappropriate coating thickness control. Excessively thick adhesive layer leads to residual glue on the protected surface after peeling, while too thin coating causes insufficient adhesion and easy film falling off. Wrinkles and edge warping during winding are also common defects, usually caused by mismatched winding tension and uneven drying of the film surface.
